Settling charged memories
Eye Movement Therapy (EMT)
A gentle, structured technique using guided eye movements to help the nervous system settle the emotional charge around difficult memories and triggers.
The approach
What it is
Eye Movement Therapy (EMT) is a personal-development technique that uses guided, rhythmic eye movements while you lightly hold a memory or trigger in mind. The bilateral stimulation helps the nervous system re-process the experience so it feels less charged and more like something that is over.
EMT is distinct from EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), which is a licensed psychotherapy for treating trauma diagnoses. The EMT offered here is a coaching-level technique for personal growth and emotional ease — not a clinical treatment.
The experience
What a session involves
- Choosing together a specific memory, trigger, or belief to work with — nothing more than you feel ready for.
- Short sets of guided eye movements, pausing between sets to notice what changes.
- Repeating gently until the charge settles, then installing a more resourceful perspective.
- Grounding and a brief reflection before you leave.
Where it helps
What it may support
- Reducing the sting of a memory that still catches you
- Quieting a specific trigger or recurring reaction
- Loosening a belief that feels 'stuck' despite understanding it
- Complementing coaching and hypnosis with a targeted technique
EMT is precise: rather than exploring a theme broadly, we work with one specific charge at a time — which makes it a powerful complement to the wider work.
Good to know
Safety & care
- EMT as offered here is a coaching technique, not EMDR psychotherapy, and is not a treatment for PTSD or other psychiatric conditions.
- If you are working through significant trauma with a therapist, please tell me — we will make sure this work supports, rather than conflicts with, that care.
- You choose the material we work with, and you can pause or stop at any time.
Questions
Frequently asked
- Is this the same as EMDR?
- No. EMDR is a licensed psychotherapy delivered by clinicians to treat trauma diagnoses. EMT is a gentler, coaching-level technique for personal development.
- Do I have to describe the memory in detail?
- No. You only need to hold it lightly in mind — the technique works without detailed retelling.
- How does it work virtually?
- Beautifully — I guide the eye movements over video with visual and audio cues, so no equipment is needed on your side.
